SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 2014 - BASEL, SWITZERLAND

The Braveheart group of 15 left Avalon's Visionary at about 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014 using 3 taxis for the transfer from the ship to the train station in Basel, Switzerland.  Using the Swiss Rail Pass that we had purchased online a few months earlier, we boarded our train to Brienz, Switzerland.  The route included one change at Interlaken Ost.  There were 8 in our "train group": Tim & Joy, Tom & Virginia, Walt & Cathy, and Sylvia & me all handling our own luggage.  This was the first time Sylvia and I had handled our own luggage on a train since we arrived at Amsterdam Centraal Station from the Amsterdam airport.  It's never fun.  There are times when we cannot locate an elevator or escalator and must carry the bags up and down stairs to get to the correct platform to board.  And, on occasion those times are when we have a very "short" window from the arrival of one train to the departure of the next one

When we made our "one change" at Interlaken, Walt and Cathy got off the train so they could stow their luggage at their reserved hotel in Interlaken.  Meanwhile, the 6 of us (sharing the chalet in Brienz for the next 5 days), continued on to Brienz.   Arriving much too early for check-in, we located the owner of the property and were able to store our luggage and then proceeded to walk about 1/2 block to the grocery store to stock up for the next couple of days.  It being a holiday weekend in Europe, the grocery store was closing early today and then remaining closed on Sunday and Monday for the Easter holiday.  We returned to the chalet and were able to store the food in the kitchen in the proper places.  We had arranged with Walt and Cathy that once their luggage was taken care of, they would board another train from Interlaken to Brienz so we could meet up and together take the boat cruise on Lake Brienz.  So, as we finished putting items away in the kitchen we walked about 1 block back to the train station waiting for the arrival of the next train.   And, Walt & Cathy came off it.  Then we all then walked to the dock and boarded the boat for the cruise.   Within the first half hour on the boat we saw this hotel nestled in the trees above the lake.
Along with various waterfalls.

And, then we arrived at the train stop for Giessback, the site of another hotel.

It was now lunch time and we proceeded to the dining room for lunch.  Here are 7 of us, the picture taker is missing.  Nearest to the window:  Tim & Joy (on right side of picture) next Cathy  & Walt, then Tom; across from Tom, Virginia, then Sylvia, and my empty chair next to Tim.

At our last look the mountains above the lake and the clouds were meeting!
Below are various scenes as we continued around the lake.

Note the color of the water.

And, we arrived at Interlaken where we had a choice to stay on the boat for the ride back to Brienz or catch a train back .  We decide to ride back on the boat.  Walt & Cathy proceeded to get off the boat & went to their hotel in Interlaken.  The below scenes are from Interlaken.

And a line forms to board the boat.
Back on the lake, the water here is the true color--beautiful blue with a "touch" of green.

The chalet-style houses are everywhere!

And, this one looks like a mansion.

This is Brienz.

Our rental chalet is in the front row (next to water line) on the extreme right (white & brown).
White & brown again centered in the back of this picture of the loading area for the boat.

Statue in yard of our chalet.

Our group (minus the picture taker) pose as they are walking toward or away from the train station in Brienz.

We returned to Brienz via the boat and our timing was perfect.  We could now check in at the chalet.  The remainder of the day was spent in the house or on the deck with dinner in the dining room (the only time we sat there for a meal).  All other meals were served at the table in the kitchen.

The chalet was spacious enough for 3 couples--3 bedrooms and one full bath, along with one half bath on the lower floor.  And, on the street level floor:  the kitchen, living/dining room.  The living room had a large bay window that looked out on the lake.  The views were wonderful!  And constantly changing!  There were sliding doors from the living room and another set from the dining room that opened onto the deck.  The lack of additional bathrooms was an issue along with the location of the half bath.  It was under the staircase and the ceiling was very low where the toilet was set.  (After one time of bumping your head on the ceiling, you usually didn't forget to duck!)  We worked out a routine where 3 bathed at night and 3 in the morning which worked rather well and helped us all be ready to leave at the same time.
