THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2008 - WARNEMUNDE, GERMANY (PORT FOR BERLIN)

THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2008 - WARNEMUNDE, GERMANY (PORT FOR BERLIN)
Overnight we had sailed from Copenhagen to this port for the city of Berlin, Germany, Warnemunde, Germany.  At this time we had never been to Berlin and inquired about how long it would take for us to get there and found it was 3 hours 45 minutes each way, on the train.  That seemed like almost a full day of travel with no time to enjoy visiting the city, so we decided against making the trip.  The following day I talked with some recently made friends who had made the trip.  They said it was a long day and that they had arrived back at the ship shortly before midnight.  Anyway,  we decided to enjoy our time in Warnemunde.

As we walked off the gangplank for our ship's tour, we were met by the sight of this canal which is called the Old Channel.  It's basically a promenade of pubs, restaurants, and shops, lined with dozens of working fishing boats and tourist boats carting people out and around the area.  Our guide said that just walking along the canal is plenty of fun for a day.

Regarding the canal, the guide continued:  You can wander around, check out the shops, sit down for a beer and people watch, grab an ice cream cone from any of the dozen vendors, have a fantastic seafood lunch or stroll out to the beach and check out the pier.

However, she didn't allow any time to do any of those things right then.  Instead, we strolled through a residential neighborhood and crossed into the town of Rostock, Germany.

There, we came upon the Warnemunde Church

We returned to the canal area where we could sit, eat, and watch.

Followed by a walk to the beautiful white beach on the Baltic coastline.

And then it was time to make our way back to the ship.
We walked along the dock, admiring the scenery.
